The USA Space City 10 Miler was staged yesterday from the campus parking lot of the University of Houston/Clear Lake. Racers on the single loop course enjoyed the best weather in the history of this HARRA Fall Series race. Low 60s and a steady breeze were refreshing for the runners and bracing for the spectators.
The big upset of the race was that the favored Sean Wade, last year's winner, couldn't dig deep enough to bury Shadrack Songok, who blazed through under BARC's signature Arch de Triumph at 50:13.2.
That's a 5.01/mile average pace, much of it into a brisk headwind, with no pack to draft off of. The pay-off? All of the male purse money; first finisher, and first through the mile markers. It made for a nice payday plus a spiffy hat courtesy of a running shoes race sponsor.

Women's field were no slackers
On the women's side of the fence, Mary Davies dominated at 57:07.7. With Emily Loeffler close on her heels at 1:00:19.4 she had to keep the hammer down, but she looked strong coming across the finish line.
Number 2 of 6 races in the HARRA Fall Series
This race was the second in the Houston HARRA Fall Series, leading up to the Houston marathon. Next on the slate is the Koala/Luke's Locker Half Marathon. This will be staged downtown Houston, so expect plenty of concrete.
It will be a fun race, but first-timers beware; that's a lot of concrete. To be notified when a new fitness or running article is published, click on "Subscribe to Email" at the top of this page or email admin@ksmithwriter.com. Opinions are welcome and encouraged. Why not add a comment?
