Runners battle the Kemah Bridge at The Toughest 10K

Runner racing downhill on the Kemah Bridge during the Toughest 10KThe second annual Toughest 10K was put on by the Bay Area Running Club this past Saturday, September 19, 2009. The event went off without a hitch and the weather cooperated, comfortably settling down in the low to mid 70s.

After the National Anthem played and the starting horn went off, the pack blasted through the inflatable starting/finishing arch and began their lactate acid-packed journey.

The course began at the Kemah Boardwalk, went down the road a bit, did two loops of the bridge, and returned to the boardwalk and the finish line where plenty of post-race carbs and drinks waited.

The awards were a bit different than the usual little plastic trophies. Instead, the winners went home with beach towels emblazoned with the race logo. The big winners of the day were the beneficiaries, The Bridge Over Troubled Water, and Amy Earnest, who is an employee of The Bridge.

If one word describes Houston, that word would be “flat”. Many runners make hillwork a regular part of Bay Area Running Club member flying down the Kemah Bridge during the Toughest 10Ktheir workout plan, and many of them in the Clear Lake area use the Kemah bridge for just that purpose. However, it was evident that many of yesterday's runners were strangers to surface angles that deviate from the norm. That's alright; the view of the boats and the bay is always a nice distraction.

What's next on the Houston race calender? The HARRA X-C Relay sponsored by our friends the Tornadoes on September 26. So get on one of your team's relay teams while there's time!
