Maribelle's 5K went off without a hitch again yesterday, August 1, 2009 in Seabrook, Texas, just south of Houston.
This race has always been directed by Pete Cahill and assisted by Jay Lee, with results compiled by the Campbells. This year the weather cooperated completely with the sun's full force remaining at bay until the last runner had come in. Whew.
One of the big draws of this forgiving out-and-back asphalt course is the popular summertime post-race amenities: plenty of watermelon, pizza, and that ultimate re-hydration beverage: tap beer. Most races go for the free Gatorade or Powerade, but Pete holds to the old standards for the summer racing traditionalists, bless his soul.
Despite the time of year, the winning time came in just over 16 minutes. Here are the Maribelle's 5K 2009 results. There was no real leading pack. As seen in the photo slide show, the first, second, and third place finishers were nowhere near each other.
This race has bounced around quite a bit. Originally it was the Redfish Run, sponsored by the Redfish bar/restaurant. Later, Maribelle's took up the banner. Located just around the corner, Maribelle's was one of Seabrooks legendary dives and juke-joints. Being a two story edifice on stilts, Ike made quick work of her.
And what's a summertime running event without a few post-race gags? Here's the race director trying to
get away after trapping local speedster Roger Redding in a rank port-o-potty. Didn't work as expected.
Outriggers is located where the original Redfish was and has added a few amenities, like a walkway to the larger parking area under the Kemah Bridge. It's got an incredible open air first floor with plenty of dock space for tying up your boat. Being a kayak fisherman, I elected to tie up elsewhere.
This is a race that has stood the test of time because of its local following. Be there next year; you won't be disappointed.
