The weather was warm, but at least the mosquitoes were not swarming and feasting on the banks of Buffalo Bayou at the X-C relay hosted by Houston's Tornados running club. Teams were fielded from all of Houston's major running clubs.
A link to the results will be posted when they're available. Want more HARRA Cross Country photos?
This was the first race of the 2009 HARRA Fall Series. The next will be the USA Space City 10-Miler. The focus on the series is to accumulate points toward Runner of the Season, Club Competition, and the HARRA Iron Foot award. Bragging rights purchased with sweat included at no extra charge.
It all started with a hill...
Well, not for the A leg runners; they started off on a relatively flat section; just a slight rise. But legs B,C, and D immediately hammered up the first hill which bordered the baton-passing zone. The first of many. Two miles isn't long but it justifies pushing harder than a 5K pace. That can be painful on a hot, hilly afternoon.
But the upside is that most runners in the Houston area have trained along the bayou so they knew what to expect. And the scenery and club camaraderie completely made up for a very short discomfort.
What's up with those wigs?
As the race was winding down, the weather cooled, and the sweat-drenched runners milled around and swilled water, sports drinks, and draft
beer, a number of people were spotted wearing economy-grade blond wigs. Was this some troupe of performance artists staging a blond joke?
Nope, it turns out they were all paying tribute to Bay Area Running Club's Veronica Hoge's ascension into a new age group as she celebrated a birthday. The gargantuan Mexican sombreros as awards and the near flawless execution of the event demonstrated once again that the Tornados really know how to put on a cross country race.
