Edward Norton discovers marathon training is no easy feat

Lots of celebrities have run marathons to raise awareness or money for their favorite charity or cause. Edward Norton is running the upcoming New York City Marathon to raise money for the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust, an organization dedicated to preserving the ecosystems of East Africa.

Just as many runners before him have discovered, Edward Norton may be realizing that training your body to run 26.2 miles is not an easy feat. Norton has set up a Twitter page so fans can follow along on his training and donate money. Over the past few days, Norton's Twitter followers have seen firsthand how difficult marathon training can be.

A few days ago, Norton posted that he has been having some problems with his achilles, saying his right achilles and lower calf "cramped up bad" during a run. The pain forced him to limp home. Yesterday, Norton tested out his achilles again and met with a sports physician about the injury. While his achilles was feeling better, he jokes that the doctor told him that "I'll be okay, not the tendon."

Edward Norton has also previously described problems with his shins, saying his shins "felt like an old man's." He goes on to say that they feel "like they'd been clubbed."

Norton's challenges come as no surprise to experienced marathon runners who know the toll marathon training can take on your body. Experts recommend a slow, gradual buildup with no more than a 10 percent increase in miles each week -- especially for beginners and new runners. Running experts also recommend establishing a mileage base of 20 to 30 miles per week for at least a few months before you start marathon training.

As of today, Edward Norton has raised $7,202 for the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust, according to his donation page. Fans can donate on his page at MaasaiMarathon.com. The New York City Marathon takes place on November 1, 2009.
