Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia won the men's 10000-meter race at the IAAF World Championships in 26:46.31. Zersenay Tadese set the pace for most of the race, and tried unsuccessfully to break away from the defending world champion over the final laps. On the last lap, Bekele surged away from Tadese to handily win the race. Tadese finished in second, while Moses Ndiema Masai of Kenya won the bronze in the men's 10000-meter final. American Dathan Ritzenhein finished in sixth place.
There were also other races of note on the third day of the IAAF World Championships. Jennifer Barringer set a new American record in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase final with a time of 9:12.50. Barringer finished in fifth place overall, and Marta Dominguez of Spain won the race in 9:07.32.
Bernard Lagat advanced to the final round of the men's 1500 meters. Lagat finished third in his semi-final heat with a time of 3:36.86, while Americans Lopez Lomong and Leonel Manzano also qualified for the final round. In an interview released on the IAAF website, Lomong said he's excited that three Americans will be in the final: "It is a great thing for me, a great moment, but also for our country. I will put it all out there for the final. I think I can run with all these guys, with all of them. I believe that 3 US medals are possible, we can work as a team."
Tomorrow, the IAAF World Championships schedule includes the women's 400-meter final and the men's 3000-meter steeplechase final.
