With a base of fine aged rum from Trinidad, this spiced rum produced in the Netherlands delivers unabashed tropical flavors and richly rewarding zest to lively cocktails.
Unlike some lesser aged spirits, the Lash spiced rum plays well on the rocks as well, showing off it's West Indian roots and four year American oak barrel maturity beneath a big bouquet of bourbon vanilla and holiday baking spices at a conservative 70 proof.
The hot water extraction process often leaves a bit of spice particulate in solution, so don't be alarmed if you see some sediment at the bottom of the bottle.
This deep mahogany colored spirit screams caramel spice on the nose. The rich vanilla, cinnamon, allspice and clove aromas combine to suggest a savory tropical fruit candy, with just a hint of bitterness mid-palette. Initial taste is a powerful dose of multifarious flavors lead by hot cinnamon, but not overly sweet as one might expect. The finish lingers with clear echoes of cinnamon, mild toasted oak and a pleasant warmth.
The Lash packs big flavor with little or no alcohol burn. Use it sparingly in powerful cocktails that crave holiday spice, such as the Zombie. Pour it over the rocks or enjoy it neat in a snifter or proper tasting glass.
The Lash Spiced Rum, produced by Bacmar LLC, is available online at selected outlets for about $29.
