This eight year old rum, known as the pride of Colombia, presents a mature flavor profile from aging in used bourbon barrels. The product has gained notoriety for an upbeat "stay positive" advertising campaign during tough economic times.
For many years, Ron Viejo de Caldas was one of Colombia's best kept secrets, starting as a provincial artisan rum, later evolving into an internationally recognized brand.
The province of Caldas is located between two Andean mountain ranges, bounded by the Cauca River on the west and the Magdalena River to the east. Colonized in the 16th century by pioneers from Spain, the region was principally known for ore mining and coffee production. The capital of Manizales sits at an altitude of 7,200 feet above sea level with a consistently cool climate averaging 65F.
The Nevado del Ruiz volcano towers over the city of Manizales where high altitude aging and clear fresh water lend to the unique qualities of Caldas rum.
Caldas rums are produced under the authority of the Colombian government and the proceeds are used to fund numerous programs in the local economy.
In 1926, Cuban rum distiller Don Ramón Badia was commissioned by the Caldas Fine Liquor and Perfume Company to create their first high quality rum. Two years later, Ron Viejo de Caldas was launched with local distribution.
In 1959 the company established the Ron de Alturas factory near Saboya, which was then expanded and modernized in 1968. The company can currently produce in excess of 25 million bottles a year.
In addition to the premium eight year old rum, Caldas produces a popular and affordable three year old rum.
