These rums are aged in charred American oak bourbon barrels for a minimum of 12 years and then skillfully hand-blended and re-casked. Upon the rum's optimum maturity it is hand-drawn, filtered and hand bottled.
This aged rum itself exudes a rich bronze color with a seamlessly smooth texture and well rounded, medium to full body. The bouquet is seductively rich with aromas of leather, oak, molasses, vanilla, honey, spice and cognac-like notes.
The palate of Angostura 1824 offers mouth-watering flavors of honey, fruit, chocolate, spices and herbs. Again, the essence of leather and fresh rubber are noted. The finish is long and leaves it's signature flavor in the mouth for some time.
Angostura 1824 Limited Reserve is best enjoyed neat, in a snifter or tulip-shaped tasting glass which allows the nose to appreciate the exotic aromas offered by this unique spirit. It can be enjoyed in a tumbler on the rocks as well, and the melting ice reveals much complexity even as the distinctive aromas remain intact.
Angostura is world famous for bitters, a secret formula developed by Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert dating back to 1824, originally created as a digestive aid for soldiers in the Brazilian jungle. The town of Angostura on the banks of the Orinoco River was an important trading post. The bitters were first exported to Europe in 1830.
They began making rum in Trinidad after World War II. It is now said to be the largest distillery in the British West Indies producing in excess of 15 million gallons of alcohol each year, bottling 600,000 cases of rum annually through its production company, Trinidad Distillers Limited. Their facility in Laventille, Trinidad features a French designed still made by Savalle. There are 6 ageing warehouses with a total capacity of 80,000 casks.
