Tampa Krewe takes USA Rugby Men's Division II National Championship in extra time

In the second match of a National Championship Sunday at Glendale’s Infinity Park, the Tampa Bay Krewe faced Doylestown Rugby for the USA Rugby Men’s Division II National Championship.

Doylestown took the lead after twelve minutes. The two teams battled in the heat for nearly thirty minutes before Tampa’s Eric Saunders tied the score in the thirty-fifth minute. A Matt McGinnis conversion gave Tampa a two point lead, and Tampa took a 7-5 advantage into halftime.

In the second half, Tampa added three to their lead with a penalty kick eighteen minutes into the half. Doylestown’s Carl Schwab broke free in the fifty-eighth minute to tie the score, and twenty minutes later Bill McCoach gave the lead to Doylestown for the first time in the half. Doylestown’s seven-point lead was short lived as Tampa’s Eual Cathey took a quick start following a Doylestown penalty and ran through five defenders for a try. The Matt McGinnis conversion tied the score at 17 with one minute remaining.

Following the intermission, a coin toss started extra time, which in rugby is played in two ten-minute periods, a two-minute break, and no sudden death.

Five minutes into the first period of extra time, Joe Hilbush’s try (unconverted) gave Tampa the lead for the day. A final try in the second ten minutes put the finishing touches on the Tampa Krewe’s 28-17 win and the Division II National Championship.
