Acting on behalf of Governor Bill Ritter, Lt. Governor Barbara O’Brien read a proclamation decreeing the month of June as Rugby Month in Colorado. The Lt. Governor received an enthusiastic welcome from rugby supporters who attended the special ceremony at Infinity Park’s Guinness Try Club in Glendale Wednesday afternoon.
The proclamation comes as a result of several high profile international, national, and local rugby events occurring throughout Colorado during the month of June. The highlight of the month’s events is the Churchill Cup International Rugby Tournament.

The Churchill Cup pool matches feature teams from six countries: Canada, England, France, Russia, Uruguay, and the United States and are scheduled for June 5, June 9, and June 13 at Glendale’s Infinity Park. It is the second straight year Denver is home to the six pool games. The finals are scheduled for the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey June 19.
In addition to the Churchill Cup, Rugby Month in Colorado includes the Men’s Club Championships (June 5-6), the National Collegiate All Stars (June 10 & 12), and the Tenth Annual Rocky Mountain Challenge (June 18-20).
The Men’s Finals are the culmination of the 2009/2010 men’s club rugby season. The top teams from around the country will be vying to become the National Championships in Division I, Division II, or Division III rugby.
The skills of America’s college rugby players will be on display during the National Collegiate All Stars, and the Rocky Mountain Challenge is America’s premier under-17 & under-19 rugby tournament.
Additional activities such as Rugby Colorado’s Try Jamboree run through June. The TRY (Touch/Tackle Rugby Youth) League allows boys and girls five and older to learn basic rugby skills and concludes with the TRY League Championships on June 28.
Rugby is the second most played game in the world and its popularity is growing in the United States. Colorado is home to over 60 rugby teams, ranging from high school boys and girls to Olde Boys where players are over fifty.
