Your regular game isn't going to go off as planned, and you're looking for something quick and easy to run in it's place? Need a game you can run as a one-shot for a game day or a convention? Just looking to try something a little different for a change of place? Here's a game you can download and be ready to play with minimal preparation.
While the Rogue Trader roleplaying game, set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, isn't out yet but you can still get a free taste of the game and its mechanics. Fantasy Flight Games released a free introductory adventure for Free RPG Day, which is now available on their website as a free PDF download. The adventure itself is decent, sending the crew of a free trader to salvage a space vessel only to discover it contains a dangerous technological artifact.
Additional pregenerated characters are also available at the website, giving you a better feel for the types of player characters that will be available in the full game. The characters in this game are more powerful than those in its sister game, Dark Heresy, with stats in the 30s and 40s on the percentile scale, but not as powerful as the scheduled third game in the series, Space Marines.
There is also a free preview of one of the character paths, the Explorator, as well a preview of how starships work. While these aren't necessarily playable demos, they will give you some additional insight into the universe if you aren't familiar with the Warhammer 40,000 background.
