I recently interviewed Patrick Kapera of Crafty Games. Crafty Games' Fantasy Craft received an ENnie Honorable Mention for Best Product of the Year and an ENnie nomination for Best Writing.
Michael Tresca: Tell us a little about Crafty Games.
Patrick Kapera: Crafty Games was founded in 2005 when I (Patrick Kapera) left Alderac Entertainment Group. Since then, my partner Alex Flagg and I have released a wide range of material for our flagship game, Spycraft (which will see a Third Edition in the spring of 2011, along with another Mastercraft game, Ten Thousand Bullets). We're a small but dedicated outfit, focusing so far on balanced toolkit games anyone can use to build their perfect fantasy or modern RPG experience. In the summer of 2011, we're branching out into new territory with two licensed games - based on the Mistborn and Looking Glass Wars novel trilogies - each of which will be more narrative and a fair bit less crunchy than our previous releases.
MT: Fantasy Craft received quite a bit of attention in the ENnies this year.
PK: This year we were proud to see Fantasy Craft nominated for Best Writing, with an Honorable Mention for Best Product of the Year. This is extremely gratifying, as Fantasy Craft was a tremendous labor of love for us, nearly two years in the making.
MT: How is Fantasy Craft different?
PK: As with all Mastercraft titles, Fantasy Craft is a living toolkit, built from the ground up to give GMs and players the components they need for their perfect settings, stories, and characters. We're a "Story First" company, but our products back that up with strong, balanced rules we feel really bring your game to life.
MT: What type of player will like Fantasy Craft?
PK: Anyone who wants to tell their stories, their way, with rules that operate just as they want. :)
MT: Where else can fans find Crafty Games?
PK: We hope to see you at GenCon! Stop by our booth to check out the first Fantasy Craft supplement, Time of High Adventure, and visit us at our Declassified seminar on Thursday night at 7pm. This year the focus will be Spycraft Third Edition and Ten Thousand Bullets, and this may be your chance to not only be heard but have a real impact on the game's production. See you there!
