I recently interviewed Dave Chalker about Critical Hits' Best Blog ENnie nomination. Critical Hits is a magazine-style gaming blog, featuring news, reviews, commentary, and regular columns on the world of RPG gamers and beyond. Critical Hits has operated continuously since October of 2005, and this is their second Ennie nomination.
Michael Tresca: Tell us about Critical Hits.
Dave Chalker: Critical-hits.com over the past year has brought on a number of new writers to provide a wide variety of articles. Phil, the Chatty DM, moved his popular "Musings of the Chatty DM" blog to Critical Hits in January, so he provides gaming wisdom and actual play reports in his own chatty style. Chris Sims, former Wizards of the Coast designer, writes a weekly column about game design and freelancing from the perspective of someone who has worked in the industry. Vanir writes a weekly humor column and packs in as many geek references as he can. Plus, regular news, reviews, and interview features keep our readers as up to date as possible.
MT: What sets your blog apart from the other entrants?
DC: We have the experience and connections to provide gaming news coverage that you'll find on our site before anyone else has it. We work very hard to provide in-depth analysis of the gaming industry, all the way from major news stories, to conventions, to single product reviews. We also provide all kinds of articles for use at your gaming table- our Skill Challenges guide is one of our most popular features.
MT: What type of player will be attracted to Critical Hits?
DC: We mainly focus on D&D, so those players/DMs will get the most benefit, but we cover so many different topics in the gaming world we like to think there will be something for everyone.
MT: Anything else you would like to add?
DC: We're always open to suggestions and direct feedback. Each regular contributor has direct contact information at the bottom of every article. While we're sometimes busy working on cool stuff for the readers, we try to be available to readers as much as we can.
