Next week all across England, television viewers will be treated to an utterly unique experience. In what is being described as “the closest thing to time travel,” 17 minutes of footage from the HM Queen Elizabeth’s 1953 coronation will be aired. The unique thing about the footage is that it is in 3D. The idea for the film was obviously hatched before the coronation, when many people didn’t have their own television and it was thought it would be a big draw for the two young filmmakers. However, it turned out that the anticipation to the coronation is what prompted many Britons to purchase their first television, so the footage was never shown publicly. In fact, the film had been lost in the national archives for over 50 years.

The film shows the Queen traveling to and from Westminster Abbey, a trip to the Derby at Epson, and footage of the Queen and Prince Philip on the Royal Barge after she was crowned. The Queen was thrilled when she had heard the footage had been found, and invited the two filmmakers to take some additional footage. It will air as The Queen in 3D next week.
