This week HM King Abdullah of Jordan dissolved the lower half of the Jordanian Parliament halfway through their four year term. This is the second time he has made such a move since he took the throne in 1999. In addition, the King ordered the government to amend a very unpopular election law and told them to be ready for elections a full two years ahead of schedule. The royal house did not give any official reason for the move, but the lower house had been accused of ignoring key issues like unemployment and poverty. Also at issue is current election law which creates a situation where MP’s from urban areas represent as many as 90,000 people where as MP’s from more rural areas represent 2,000-3,000 people. This reduces the representation of urban areas, traditional Islamist strongholds. According to the constitution they must reconvene in four months, but that too could be delayed by HM the King.
