HM King Harald V of Norway has officially invited US President Barack Obama to stay at the royal palace in Oslo when he is there to accept his Nobel Peace Prize. If the offer is accepted, the President will sleep in the King Haakon VII suite, which has been used for guests since 1907, when Danish King Frederik VIII first stayed there. If First Lady Michelle Obama joins her husband, she will use the Queen Maud Suite.
The invitation has not been formally accepted. All that has been decided is that the US President will share an audience with the King before accepting his prize. The Norwegian Nobel Committee earlier this month selected Obama as winner of the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize, and even the President said he was "surprised and deeply humbled." The peace prize is one of the awards endowed by Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, they are presented annually on December 10, the anniversary of Nobel's death. The peace prize is presented in Oslo in the presence of the Norwegian royal family; the other awards are presented in Stockholm in the presence of their Swedish royal counterparts.
