A recently released book on the Danish royal family claims that HM Queen Margrethe will abdicate on her birthday next year. The book, written by royal journalist John Lindskog, claims that due to Prince Henrik’s declining health in recent years, they will retire to France. The Prince Consort has been handing off a number of his duties to his son and daughter-in-law, but this was thought to just be a natural ‘retirement’ of sorts.

The interesting thing about the claim is that Queen Margrethe has always been very against abdication and this would make her the first Danish monarch to do so. The Danish Court denied the claim stating “There is no truth in this. There are no deliberations of that sort.” The claim is also able to be questioned by the Queen herself. She once stated “Being Queen is a profession…an office that one cannot put aside when you come home from work. It is there all the time, it is there all your life. For me, it is a responsibility that does not include abdication. It is a task one has been given and taken upon oneself, and one does not relinquish it because it would perhaps be convenient personally to be shot of some of it.”

Time will tell, but the odds are that this is just a rumor and the Queen will be on the throne for years to come. Crown Prince Fredrick will be there to support her as he has, and HM has Fredrick’s wife, brother, and sister-in-law to lean on, not to mention her sister.
