Have you always dreamed of traveling to Egypt to visit the pyramids and antiquities but can’t find the money or time? Visit the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum and Planetarium in San Jose instead. The museum houses the largest collection of Egyptian artifacts on display in the western United States from the pre-dynastic era through the early Islamic period.

Architecturally inspired by the temple of Amon at Karnak, the collection houses over 4,000 pieces. Immerse yourself in the beautiful surroundings including fountains, statues, and exotic plants. Imagine what it might have been like to be live in ancient Egypt among such beautiful treasures.

Rosicrucian Park houses a Planetarium, Peace Garden, Rosicrucian Temple and Research Library. The structures reflect both Egyptian and Moorish architecture. The Peace Gardens channel s the 18th Dynasty and provides a peaceful setting to ponder life. The Museum showcases artifacts and ritual items that were used in everyday life in ancient Egypt. The Planetarium is the fifth planetarium built in the United States dating back to 1936.

In addition to the artifacts on display throughout the museum there is a tomb that is available for viewing. The guide describes the inscriptions and symbols carved onto the tomb. It is a fascinating experience and will save you a trip to Cairo. If you are wary of tight spaces, you might want to skip the tomb tour. It can get crowded if there is a big group on the tour.

Egyptians were believers in the after-life which is why they were buried with many of their prize possessions. This is lucky for us, because many of these objects comprise the collection at the museum that gives a fuller understanding of this society. Egyptians were lovers of beer and it was a staple drink for most people. The planetarium offers several showings each day and the admission is included with your ticket. If you have time it is worth seeing.

After you have allowed for a leisurely tour of the museum, planetarium, gift shop and grounds you are probably ready for a snack. Head over to Santana Row in San Jose near the Westfield Valley Fair Mall for a wide selection of restaurants and pubs. If you are inspired by the Egyptians love of beer there are several pubs to slake your thirst. Who knew that a visit to Egypt was so easily accessible?!
