Most visitors coming to Puerto Rico stay within the confinements of the San Juan metropolitan area, the island’s capital rich in culture, shopping and fine dining. However, many of Puerto Rico’s greatest and most beautiful assets lie far from this touristy region. More deserving however, is the exquisite beauty that Puerto Rico’s offshore uninhabited islands offer.
Just a few short miles from the Southern Coast, lies a small island named Caja de Muertos. It translates to Coffin Island (or Dead Man’s Chest) in Spanish, earning its nickname in large part to its shape – because that’s precisely what it looks like from afar, though folklore tell of much more. After a visit, I’ve come to the realization that Caja de Muertos is truly one of Puerto Rico’s best kept secrets.
Caja de Muertos is a small island enjoyed by the locals who’ve been coming for years. Picture the truest blue, and the whitest of whites. This describes the color of the water and the softness of the sand at Caja de Muertos. Perfect for sunbathing, snorkeling or scuba diving, this island will not disappoint. What’s more, this uninhabited paradise makes for the perfect romantic getaway from your trip in Puerto Rico, with its many nooks and secluded beaches – hike to the top of the lighthouse which dates back to 1887, or stray away together on a secluded cove.
Caja de Muertos is located just 6 miles south of Ponce, Puerto Rico’s second largest city. Located just an hour and a half away, Ponce is easily accessible by car from San Juan. Because it’s located in the South, the climate is very dry and it hardly ever rains, making it perfect for beachgoers year round.
Getting to Caja de Muertos? The island is easily accessible by ferry from Ponce’s famous boardwalk, La Guancha. However, the ferry operates only on weekends. Or call Island Ventures Water Excursions -(787) 842-8546 or (787) 608-3082
Visitors can also arrange for a full-day tour by catamaran from one of Puerto Rico’s premier tour companies: Acampa PR. For more details on their tour, click here.
