With just over a month to go, Guinness lovers should be gearing up, no matter where they live, to drink their Guinness. “What happens in little over a month?” you ask. Why, it is the 250th anniversary of Guinness!
On the 24th of September, at 17:59 local time in Dublin, a global toast will take place in order to raise a glass to Arthur Guinness, and will mark 250 years since he signed a 9,000 year lease on the St. James Gate Brewery. That day there will be celebrations and performances in Dublin which include Irish and international headliners such as Black Eyed Peas, Estelle, Tom Jones, Imelda May, Sugababes and David Gray. Celebratory concerts will also take place in 60 cities around the world. Other international cities, including New York, Lagos, Yaoundé and Kuala Lumpur, will simultaneously host events. And when New York raises a glass 17:59 local time in Dublin, the curtain will come down on 24 hours of global celebrations.
However, the place to really be is in Dublin. With four studios and 28 pubs having already committed to hosting live music events on September 24, the Guinness Storehouse is putting on an inspired program of traditional music, lectures, tours and cookery demos designed to entertain and enlighten its well-timed visitors. And it is all free! But, of course, you will need to buy your Guinness for quaffing. Festival events will take place daily at no extra charge to Guinness Storehouse visitors. Space for these events is limited and offered on a first come, first serve basis.
Tourism Ireland, Virgin Atlantic and Guinness are running a campaign online to give people a chance to win a trip to Ireland for the celebrations. Additionally. to celebrate the Irish down under, Guinness is launching a 250 Anniversary Brew, a limited edition offering only, the commemorative carbonated beer to be made available this month.
Lineup at the Guinness Storehouse:
Mondays: Guinness Storehouse Head Chef Justin O’Connor will be teaching participants the art of Cooking with Guinness and giving away a Guinness Cookbook. Impress your loved ones back home with your new-found culinary prowess... or just enjoy a free sample or two of Justin's tasty work.
Wednesdays: For those who consider themselves true Guinness connoisseurs, check out the Guinness Variants Tasting Sessions and learn to appreciate the delicacies and nuances of the different Guinness variants (you might need to book your taxi home before you begin!).
Thursdays: The Guinness Advertising Tour looks back at some of the company's most memorable campaigns from the past 80 years.
Additionally, two tours and talks take visitors even further into Guinness' fascinating past; the specially-commissioned Guinness 250 Tour (Fridays) and Top 10 Golden Moments of Guinness History (Tuesdays).
Then, each Saturday a Céilí Mór (traditional Irish social dance) will be held featuring a live Céilí band and troupe of professional Irish dancers. And, on Sundays, the Storehouse’s fifth-floor Source Bar will be home to an Irish music session or “seisún” of jigs, reels and ballads. Both weekend hooleys take place at 13:00.
ARTHUR'S DAY
Events will culminate on Arthur’s Day - 24th September 2009 - when cities across the world will come together to mark this milestone in the life of a remarkable Irish brand. Celebrations will begin in Dublin where renowned music acts and local talent will be performing at locations across the city - from pubs, bars and music venues to the St. James’s Gate brewery itself where one of its most historic buildings, Hop Store 13, will be converted into a live music studio.
