The Q&Q:
Q: How many novels have you published at this point?
A: Three (including the Feb release) with 2 more scheduled for later this year. My first book came out in the US in April 09, The Secret Mistress Arrangement.
Q: Everyone’s received a great review or two--tell me what means the most to you and why?
A: I’m still so new that the fact anyone at all reads my books – much less writes a good review – floors me. I’m very easily pleased. As long as they enjoyed it, I’m tickled pink.
Q: What made you want to become a romance writer?
A: I love to fall in love. Though I’m happily married (almost 15 years now!), I love getting to relive that “first-time-first-kiss” feeling. Plus, love is the most complicated emotion there is, so it’s a challenge to write a story that explores why people fall in love with each other. Getting to wear sweatpants to work every day is simply a bonus.
Q: How would you describe your type of book? What type do you like writing best (i.e. light/funny V. dramatic/angst-filled V. suspenseful V. poignant V. etc.)?
A: I’d describe them as sexy and sassy and flirty. They’d also be on the “light” side, and I hope people think they’re funny in the same places I do. I don’t do deep, dark, heavy, on-going angst. My characters do have emotional baggage, but it’s on wheels and fits in the overhead compartment. I write the same kind of books I like to read – spunky, sassy heroines and alpha males. I also like the short format. The plot has to be very tightly focused and it has to keep moving along at a quick pace. Sometimes it’s a challenge to get everything into a short format, but I enjoy that challenge
Q: Tell me your favorite “when I was doing research for this novel you
wouldn’t believe what I did/what happened” story:
A: My research secret is Facebook. As I’ve reconnected with old friends on-line, I’ve made mental notes of everyone’s career paths and hobbies – just in case they might have information I’ll need for a book. Last year, I sent a list of questions to one of my friends who’s now a nurse, but forgot to mention it was research for a book. She was so concerned, she started contacting other classmates to see if any of them knew what was going on with me and my life that I had all these medical questions. Another friend piped up mentioning that I’d sent him an email full of legal questions. My whole senior class was worked up and worried long before anyone thought to just ask me what was up. I’m now very careful to preface all research emails with “I’m doing research for the new book…”
Q: Besides being a romance novelist, what other fascinating or off-beat jobs/careers have you had for a day job?
A: I trained as a ballet dancer – and even apprenticed with a company – but apprentices aren’t paid, so I don’t think that counts as a job. I organized scientific conferences for NASA, and I taught college-level English. And like most English majors, I have extensive experience in the food and beverage service industry.
Q: Tell me about your most fascinating inspiration for a book or story.
A: I wrote an entire book simply because I had a sentence I thought would make a great opening line: “Note to self: never pre-pay your honeymoon.” That was all I had to start with, and I built the whole story from there. I don’t recommend that method, by the way. The result is my February book, Magnate’s Mistress…Accidentally Pregnant!
Q: If you were going to write a non-fiction book, what would the title be? (this is my novelist’s version of the Barbara Walters’ special question of “If you were a tree what kind would you be?”)
A: “How to Build an Escape-Proof Gerbil Cage” because that would mean I had finally succeeded in keeping those little Houdini rodents where they belong. (The things we put up with for our children…sigh.)
Q: Anything else you’d like to share with readers that I haven’t asked?
A: I’m a Sagittarius who enjoys walks on the beach and nights in with a bottle of wine… oh, wait, this isn’t *that* kind of interview… How about that I love hearing from readers, and that they can find me through my website or friend me on Facebook. (And if they friend me on Facebook, I promise not to send them requests to play Mafia Wars…)
