After learning about the precarious situation of children at the Diocese of Mukonchi in Zambia, Fr. Valdemar held a fund-raising sale at Holy Family Parish of a few of his artwork pieces to sponsor some of the needy children.
The funds will provide basics, such as food and education, for some of the most needy children in that diocese.
Formerly known as Northern Rhodesia, the landlocked African country of Zambia changed to its current name upon receiving its independence from the UK in 1964. It was one of the African countries to suffer from prolonged droughts during the 1980's and the 1990's. The decline in copper prices also had a profound impact on the country's economy.
The parish of Mukonchi, located in central Zambia, covers an area of about 3,000 square miles of underdeveloped rural areas, and has a population of 30,000 people, most of them subsistence farmers earning a living from their produce. Several foreign missionaries volunteer at this diocese.
Fr. Grzegorz, a Polish priest who attended the same seminary as Fr. Valdemar, recently sent a postcard to Holy Family Parish in appreciation of the fundraiser for the needy children under his spiritual care. Fr. Grzegorz also included drawings from some of the small children who will receive food and schooling thanks to this effort directed by Fr. Valdemar.
