Boardwalk Bombshells to challenge the Iron Curtain

This Saturday night the Santa Cruz Derby Girls will be hosting a legendary team from Tucson, Arizona. The Iron Curtain, a home team from Tucson Roller Derby, will be making their Northern California debut at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium when they take on the all-star Santa Cruz team, the Boardwalk Bombshells.

Tucson Roller Derby was one of the very first flat-track roller derby teams in the nation. They founded their league in 2003 and the Iron Curtain was added as their second home team in 2004. Since then, Tucson has grown to a large organization with a total of five competitive teams and a junior roller derby league for minors. Though the league has a travel team, the Saddletramps, the Iron Curtain has recently taken to the road as they have played against Rage City Roller Girls of Anchorage, Alaska and the secondary travel team for the Derby Revolution of Bakersfield. Both ventures resulted in victories for the Iron Curtain with commanding high score spread (158 - 33 against Rage City and 211 - 9 against Bakersfield). In their hometown, they took third place for the 2009 season after handily defeating the Furious Truckstop Waitresses (148 - 38).

The captain of the Iron Curtain is Helen Wheels who is a veteran skater who was originally a player for AZRD. In those days she was known as Sheriff Shutyerpaio. The Iron Curtain is also featuring some guest skaters from the other Tucson home teams for this game in order to fill out their roster.

One player to keep an eye on is a young lady by the name of Luc3f3r. She is the first known skater to have graduated from a junior derby league and continued to play on an adult league. Tucson Roller Derby was the first league in the nation to organize a junior derby league which started close to four years ago. They are affectionately known as the Derby Brats.

The girls from Santa Cruz have had a very busy 2009 season and they have experienced both the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. The Boardwalk Bombshells are coming off a rough one point loss last month to the Port City Roller Girls (87 - 86). They have lost games this year to Silicon Valley Roller Girls (131 - 100), Jet City Roller Girls (128 - 124), and Sonoma County Roller Derby (167 - 56). However, they have notched wins against the Derby Revolution of Bakersfield (133 - 69) and the L.A. Derby Dolls (128 - 122).

The Bombshells are looking to bring home another victory to their rambunctious and enthusiastic audience who consistently packs the Civic for every game. If prior ticket sales are any indication, the bout is sure to be another sold-out event for the Santa Cruz Derby Girls. Their pre-show and halftime performance is the always engaging co-ed cheer leading squad Cheer SF.

I don't believe Luc3f3r will be playing. She's gone off to college, and was recently spotted on a TXRG video stream, where the announcer implied she might soon be trying out to join their league. Sounds like she's attending UTA or whatever it's called.

This is less me being stalkerish "super-fan" and more me thinking she's got an amazing story that says a lot about the future of derby. As does Atomatrix joining Oly. And for that matter, Quadzilla coaching Rat City and Eric Darnell Davis coaching the Angry Beavers (and others). I like to focus on what changes the future might hold for the sport...

Well she was on the roster that Tucson submitted so maybe she is making the trek out!

Just to make a clarification...Iron Curtain didn't play Bakersfield's travel team, they played the "B" team and that was their 2nd bout. However, the Iron Curtain are more than welcome to come back and play our "A" team. :-)

Hey Naughty...I think you may have misread. It does say Secondary Travel Team....I think that means your B team.

And Vee, is the roster for Santa Cruz correct? I didn't think Pippi was playing in this one.

Mojo, the roster was given to me by Lulu on Tuesday orWednesday and maybe things have changed since then?

Naughty, Mojo is correct. I often use "primary" and "secondary" to refer to A teams and B teams. I just think it sounds better :)
