The B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls are heading to Las Vegas this weekend to take on the Boston Derby Dames. The two teams will be facing off at RollerCon, the annual international roller derby convention held in Las Vegas every summer. They will be playing at the Las Vegas Sports Center on Friday July 31st at 12 pm.
Both teams are currently ranked in fifth place in their respective WFTDA regions. The San Francisco-based B.A.D. Girls had held the number one spot for the Western region for several months but were recently bumped out of the top four. On the popular roller derby news website, Derby News Network, Boston is ranked #11 in the nation while the B.A.D. girls are ranked as #13.
Boston's all-star travel team, the Boston Massacre, has had a very busy 2009 season. They have notched wins against Maine Roller Derby (128 - 24), Rocky Mountain Roller Girls (125 -87), and Duke City Derby (155 - 107). This season they have lost to three teams that reside in the top #5 in the nation. They lost close matches to Charm City Roller Girls (89 -77), Philly Roller Girls (121 -63), and Texas Rollergirls (118 - 84).
The B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls have been much more quiet this season compared to Boston. They have played just two WFTDA sanctioned games. They were victorious over their California rivals, the Angel City Derby Girls in April (138 - 82), but suffered a loss to the Rat City Roller Girls in May ( 182 -117). While they haven't had many games so far this year, the B.A.D. Girls are about to go on a tear as they head into tournament season. In August alone they will face off against the Rose City Rollers, the San Diego Derby Dolls, and the Texas Rollergirls.
As the only WFTDA sanctioned bout to be played at RollerCon this year, the venue is sure to be a full house. Skaters from almost every roller derby league in the world will be in attendance for this bout. The level of exposure for both teams is huge. Not only will people be watching to see what develops between a West Coast and East Coast match-up, leagues from all over the world who have yet to see WFTDA top ranked derby will also be observing closely.
