The Texas Rollergirs will take on the Charm City Roller Girls Sunday in Austin. In a crowd favorite expo bout, the Austin Derby Brats will also be skating.
The Texas Rollergirls-Charm City bout should be a very evenly matched competition. Currently the Texas Texecutioners are ranked 8th in the nation by Derby News Network, while Charm City from Baltimore is ranked 11th by DNN.
This should be the toughest home interleague bout for the Texas Rollergirls since they were upset in December of 2006 by the Tucson Saddle Tramps. The Texecutioners have been on the road taking on some of the toughest teams in the WFTDA this season. While losing bouts to highly ranked teams like the Denver Roller Dolls, the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls, and the defending WFTDA champion Oly Rollers; the Texies has been working on improving many of its newer talented skaters on the 2010 Texecutioners. These match ups against the best flat track teams in the nation should have helped to sharpen them up for this home WFTDA-sanctioned bout.
Top jammers for Texas include Olivia Shootin’ John, Bloody Mary, and Molotov M Pale. Texas will feature some strong team blockers including Belle Starr, Shank, Curvette, and Crackerjack.
Charm City is known to be one of the most physical teams on the East Coast. Last weekend they defeated a tough Kansas City Roller Warrior team in Baltimore, 220-158, an impressive win. This team was a couple of injuries away from making into the National WFTDA tournament in 2009, but this year’s squad is healthy.
Leading the team from Baltimore is legendary East Coast jammer Joy Collision. Other more-than-capable jammers include Flo Shizzle, Duchess of Torque, and Reckless Ndangerment. While able to score numerous points in a bout, Charm City is mainly known for its rough and tough physical blockers. Dolly Rocket is probably the most renowned blocker, but Rosie the Rioter and Holly Gohardly are extremely accomplished in causing distress to opposing jammers or blockers.
This is an excellent chance for flat track roller derby and area sports fans in general to see derby at its current highest level. This bout will take place in north Austin at Playland Skate Center, 8822 McCann Drive. Doors open at 6:30 pm with first whistle scheduled for shortly after 7 o’clock.
Tickets are available for $12 in advance of the Texas Rollergirls event. Ticket outlets include Rio Rita, a coffee shop located at 1308 E 6th Street in Austin, Cheapo Discs located at 914 N Lamar just west of downtown, and at Playland Skate Center. Advanced tickets can also be purchased through Brown Paper tickets online. Tickets at the door will cost $15. More Texas bout information

Comments
This should be a great game! Charm City, while located in the East region, plays a strategic game similar to that seen in the West region (where Denver, Rocky Mountain and Oly all sit).
For those who are fans of triangulation, Rocky Mountain has played both teams within the past two months. They beat Texas by 99 and Charm City by 137. Granted, Texas was playing a hangover bout, having played against Denver the night before.
