Two words: Cody Ohl.
Nothing could be scarier for the world leaders in the tie down roping than the image of Cody Ohl looming in the rear view mirror. The six time World Champ thrives on pressure and adversity.
He came to this Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) over $60,000 behind the world leader Tuf Cooper. In two days he has won the maximum possible, $35,769, and closed the lead on Cooper to $33,000.
On Friday night, Ohl claimed his second straight round win -- and 45th in a remarkable career -- with a 7.1 second run that beat the field by half a second.
He is now third and holds over a second lead in the early going of the average race. That check would be worth $45,865.
"You know, I've got a lot of things on my mind. A lot of young kids lost their lives this year -- and it's close friends of mine that are here [whose kids passed away]. Like Joe [Beaver] last night, he took his hat off and saluted Byron Walker and his family," Ohl says. "I just started crying in the roping box. I've got kids and it just emotionally kicked my butt."
"Horse is working great, and everything's clicking," Ohl continues. "Nothing I've done has been a gamble. It's just been as textbook as I can go and as fast as I can go. Nothing's been out of control."
