I'm not much of a fashion guy, so I don't know if pink and grey work together generally...but Katy Perry, with her confection sugar-sweet sound (and personality), pinup good looks, and Vegas-style stage decor and costuming, made for a lightweight and refreshing opening to the day under these frustrating skies. Her mainstage audience provided the first surprise of the day...an aromatic presence more often expected of a Phish crowd. Perry, though, had the crowd, of mostly women, pogo-ing feverishly to her hit "Hot and Cold". Perry was so into it, her "puppies almost popped out" during the song.
From the mainstage, I made my way to the Broad Street Stage, just south of the Space Needle, for Natalie Portman's Shaved Head. NPSH are a local group with a growing following. They play an energetic electro-pop with lots of audience participation.
Only a few hours into the festival, and I’ve already heard alterna-disco, reggae with violin, one of the biggest pop acts in the country currently, and some pretty solid street musicians. There was also this guy I saw in Memorial Stadium…he had the most killer afro AND an unbelievable porn-stache. Burt Reynolds woulda been proud. If I see him again I’m gonna get a picture.
Next on the Mainstage will be the All-American Rejects at 3:15pm, Sick Puppies on the Rockstar Stage at 3:30, and later this afternoon local boys Akimbo on the EMP Sky Church Stage.
