The death of metal singer and bassist Peter Steele has been confirmed by Type O Negative's manager as well as other members of the band. According to an email sent by manager Mike Renault to CBS News, Steele died on the night of April 14th, 2010 of heart failure. He was 48 years old.
Rumors of Steele's death had circulated back in 2005 but those rumors were found to be a publicity stunt to promote a newly released album. This previous stunt caused much speculation about the validity of today's news of his passing.
Steele was known for his brawny (6 foot 7) stature and booming voice. He reportedly battled severe depression and substance abuse problems, revealing in interviews that he had spent time in treatment. His dark demeanor was reflected in the morbid and somewhat devious lyrics of Type O Negative.
The band's former label, Roadrunner Records, posted a tribute to Steele on their website today, offering condolences to Steele's friends and family and echoing the sentiments of fans that Steele's presence will be greatly missed.
