Rockwood Music Hall pulls all nighters

Rob Holub's CD release party at a recent Rockwood Music Hall Weekend Session.

Just off of East Houston and Stanton Streets, 10 to 11 performers take the stage each Saturday and Sunday for the Rockwood Music Hall Weekend Sessions. Beginning at 3pm, with closing acts hitting the stage as late at 1am, patrons can enjoy a showcase of rock, pop, Hip-Hop and more at the charge of a one-drink minimum.

Last Saturday, singer, songwriter Rob Holub kicked off the weekend's 11-act showcase. Swiss-born Holub, who sings in English and French, just released his debut album Stranger on 2nd Avenue. Part reminisces, inspirations and aspirations, Holub has a story or two to tell. A mix of pop, rock and contemporary, each word, chord emanates a sentimental soulfulness.

Holub on piano was joined by guitarist Kent Thompson, bassist Teddy Williams and Hal Aponte on drums. The remainder of the 10-song set included “If Not Today,” “Counting Raindrops,” “Miss Face Book,” “NY Blues” and “Les Choses et Toi.” Recorded at Dreamland Studios in Woodstock, NY, Stranger was helmed by Grammy-winning producers Mike Visceglia (Suzanne Vega's longtime bassist and musical director) and Zak Soulam.

The rest of the night was jam-packed. Bluesy, Hip-Hop rockers New Lewi hit the stage next, followed by Erin Lang's twangy, electronica, indie rockers like the Mike Montrey Band, The Royal Chains and The Say So’s, James Maddock and aussie duo Hans and Sven on accoustic, the Norah Jones-evoked vocals of Arleigh Kincheloe and band Sister Sorrow and the Dirty Birds, southern rockers Swamp Cabbage and the folkier rock of Goodbye Picasso.
