This 85 Maserarti with only 18K miles will be crushed as a clunker
The Italians have a magical way of taking the raw stuff that makes up a car and creating a living breathing work of art.
Especially when the car is built by Italian companies ending in "i".
But alas something went terrible wrong with this magic formula in 1985 when this Maserati Biturbo was built in Italy and sold in America.
When you combine that with the fact the the Maserati Biturbo is not exactly the ideal ski car for the slopes of Colorado you can start to see why somebody would trade it in as a clunker, and as a $3500 down payment on a new Subaru.
Let's face facts. The Maserati Biturbo was pretty much a clunker when it was built (think Porsche 924) so it should come as no surprise that it ended up in the clunker section of a Golden, Colorado Subaru dealership parking lot.
Check out the news vid on how it got traded HERE.

So it's a Maserati, that means it cant be a clunker? An 85 model with only 18k
miles on it means dry rotted seals, hardened gaskets, gummed brake system and fuel system. Would YOU want that car? Lets face it, the Biturbo isnt Maserati's best work either. So what's the fuss? It's a clunker.
Its an Italian car collectors dream! Destroy it? Blastimus !!!
and my 1980 Chevy rusted out V8 Guzzler Pickup with 175K miles is NOT a clunker. It's too old to be a clunker, .. it's a rare collectable.
those have been unreliable clunkers for about 15 years bankrupting many an owner
Why don't they do this, instead of crushing it,auction it off and donate the money to a local charity. It seems such a waste crushing it just for scrap metal !!
I dusted a 1985 Biturbo with my 944 Turbo in 1986 on a road that should have showcased it's best abilities. I was a road with good straights and periodic twisties and swing backs. But ultimately, it was too high strung. It seemed its owner had to really rev it up to get it going and by then, I was gone. My old car is still running. Seems the Germans can build 'em to last. Unless it's truly rolling art (most Ferraris, Maserati Ghibli, or some of the newer models or the rare Lancia or Alpha) the Italians have a harded time making them last.
How about this: Since it has to be made non-drivable, put the stuff in the engine to seize it up, then donate the 'remains' to a museum. That is, if it really is a rare car type. It can't be driven and people could still admire it.
yes i would take that car i would fix everything on it and drive it every day. i am a mechanic so if it died i would fix it myself and keep on going. and just because its an 85 does not mean everything is bad on it. i have a 1990 jeep wrangler and everything still works great. the guy was just to lazy to figure out for himself what was wrong with it.

i have a 1994 maza 929 is my car a clunker?
you are hella dumb dude. that car is sick.
I used to be a mechanic. Those things were junk right off the assembly line.
There is no way that this Maserati will meet its demise. The parts alone are probably worth more than the $3500.00 Some one better track this car
Send it to me...I'll take care of it...you know...disabling it and all that stuff (after I pamper it, respect it, and drive the hell out of it)! It's a Maserati, for God's sake, and it deserves to be appreciated by a loyal owner!
What a waste - proves that the federal government while not good at making anything is really quite good at destroying things. Now let's move on to federal Health care
italian car for a japanese car now thats what i call being a true american. come on you idiots get it from an american car co. our goverment at work. geez.
Who cares?,I find it hard to understand why there is so much conversation about this BS.
Who Cares?.
Only idiots buy non american made cars!
The only good thing them noodle benders make is spaghetti! as ron santo would say:COME ON!!!!!!!!!
what about a 1 legged man at an ass kicking contest?
It is a classic car and should be auctioned to the highest bidder. The prodeeds should go into R & D for improving the components that are used in hybrid or all-eceltric cars. Battery efficiency is probably a priority. Also setting up an ifrastucture for this type of vehicle should be looked into as well. I love to drive but I would rather spend less money charging up a car than paying three to four dollars a gallon to power an inefficient internal combution ride.
Buy American? ... let's see ... assembly line worker doing the same unskilled labor thing all day with low quality and making well over $25 an hour plus massive medical benefits and constantly whinning for a raise or acting like they are suppose to be immune to job losses. And ya wonder why most Americans don't want to buy American cars ... crap cars made by fat ($$$$) unions. I gave my 8 years in the military for this country and nobody is fighting to give me a job... I cant even get a minimum wage job because I don't speak spanish. "NUFF SAID!!!!"
I think that it is really dumb to take some thing like this and crush it. Why crush it part it out. The parts take energy - time and material to make!!! Stupid ... People are not thinking and goes for all of the other cars. I do not understand there thinking dumb dumb...
Stupid Don't crush it part it out. Some one will be looking for parts for this car and many of the other cars. Why ....Time is money material is money and energy should be persevered. What is with THIS ....the cars why kill some thing when it is still working ..
damn right buy american ! have 10 SKILLED union members go at the piece of crap with pick axes ! and its gets traded in for a subaru ??? gotta be a white shirt !
Hey TEE, many Japanese cars are manufactured in the U.S.A., while many, so-called, BIG-3 cars are made either north of the boarder or south of the boarder where labor is cheaper, unions non-existent and epa laws don't keep us from poisoning the only fresh-water in the town. Oh yeah, and they are manufactured at a loss ... You are missing a few variables to your equation.
This car will not be crushed as is... they can strip whatever they want from the body and interior, just the engine and tranny can't be reused. This is such a non-story!. Do you really think a scrap yard will crush this car without removing the seats and wood interior for resale. It's cash for clunkers because of the poor gas mileage, not because it has leather seats!
W T F???? What is wrong with that guy.....d u m b a s s,d u m b a s s
I would have loved to support American car companies, had they and big oil not been scratching one anothers backs this whole time. Why else would they not have produced more fuel efficiant cars? Thank you Japanese cars and the AMERICAN citizens that produced them!
Oh... Thank you foreign car companies for providing steady jobs for Americans.
Most of those clunkers that are getting traded in are American made. Buy American? I don't think so!
1st car was a Nissan great car my brother totaled it, second a chevy - junk, third chevy - junk, fourth ford - major junk, fith tried a nother new chevy -junk, lats car Nissan have had it 10 years and less than 800 in repairs and 2 sets of tires and 127k miles and still looks and runs like new.....so my next car....NISSAN. just because its made here by american car company and unions means its more expensive and NOT made to last.
That's funny. Jeremy Clarkson crushed that same Maserati on Top Gear. New Maserati's are a lot better.
he should have put it on ebay or autotrader.com a waiste of a classic sports car but since he was getting rid of it he didnt care what happenend to the car
Truth is he got just about what this car is worth. From a collector's perspective Maserati Bi-Turbos are just about worthless. Many of these cars sell at collector auctions for far less than $3500.00. This guy wasn't an idiot, he just knew what his car was really worth. And the author is correct, these cars were simply awful when they were brand new. Smart move.
I have to agree with the "part it out" theory - it would have been worth more that way. Problem with the BiTurbo was that it was a piece of sh-t when it was new, as demonstrated by the Maserati guys who had to have the engines rebuilt after constant main bearing and oil pump failures. Nice cars - just POS reliability !!
As for you guys who are whining about many of us not buying American, well, guess what, stupid - we did buy American - we own the freakin' companies by proxie, so my theory is that every one of us should get a free car of our choice. I sure would like a new crew-cab dually to tow my Japanese race car with next year.....
I remember when they started selling cars from other countries, it was said then about what would happened and it has. And many Union's are giving jobs to people who served in the military that guy Rob hasn't been looking very hard.
"just because its made here by American car company and unions means its more expensive and NOT made to last."
Oh so true. I have owned Chevy, Dodge, Ford, Nissan, VW, Toyota, Mazda and even a Honda motorcycle.
My next vehicle will not be a Chevy, Dodge or Ford (although I do respect Ford for saying no). I'm going with either a Toyota or VW. Maybe Nissan, I just don't care for most of their designs right now and I sure as hell can't afford a Skyline or 350Z.
None of the American cars have ever lived up to the quality of the imports that I have had. It hurts to say it, but it's true.
The last Toyota that we owned was 10 years old when we sold it. It ran perfectly. There was nothing wrong with it, we were just tired of it. In the 10 years of owning it, the only thing that was ever done to it was a basic tune up, brake jobs every couple of years and oil changes.
Wish I could say the same for my eight year old Ford. :(
You donot need actual vouchers or coupons to partipate in this program. All dealers are required and government will
reimburse the fees for the clunkers
