Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) said on the House floor Friday that GOP opposition to the Waxman-Markey energy bill was tantamount to funneling money to terrorist organizations. During debate on the bill, Rep. Weiner said, "Ahmadinejad, the Saudi Kingdom--they want exactly what my Republican friends are advocating." He added, "We can't come to the floor and say I'm outraged at what's going on in Iran...and then come to the floor and continue the policies that are paying for them."
Waxman-Markey, formally known as the "American Clean Energy and Security Act", was approved by a vote of 219-212 Friday evening. It mandates that 15% of the nation's electricity be generated using renewable energy by 2020. Republican House leaders led opposition to the bill, saying that it will increase energy prices for homeowners and harm the economy. Eight Republicans voted for passage of the bill.
