Surgery delayed for Rices' Mozingo due to-----ANT BITE!

Chad Mozingo/Rice Outfielder

Chad Mozingo was all ready for surgery that was scheduled for last Thursday, June 25th, to repair damaged ligaments in his left ankle.

The Owls sophomore, soon to be junior, outfielder had already played and waited an entire baseball season, taking one for the team, before finally deciding to go forward with the procedure in preparation for next year's run at a championship.

Speaking of preparation, doctors and their nurses tend to be very thorough before proceeding with any types of operations and Mozingo's was no exception. He had been warned on a previous visit about an existing open wound around the ankle area and told to "you've got to get that under control." He was told that Dr. Clanton would cancel the surgery if he saw an open wound.

Believe it or not, Mozingo's ankle surgery has been delayed by-------an ANT BITE!

"Two days before the surgery, I stepped in an ant pile---(only) got one ant bite though. Almost got them all off me, but one of them bit me. Sure 'nough I show up at six in the morning and the doctor, Clanton, says that he can't do it."

"The first thing I did---was, I said---hey---before we go any further, I want to go ahead and let you know I got an ant bite. He takes one look at it and says "I can't do it---there's puss coming out of that."

To make matters more challenging for Mozingo, Dr. Clanton is out of town attending to personal matters. The surgery has been rescheduled for July 14th. Mozingo says he will have to wait close to three weeks before the surgery can be performed.

"Go ahead and add three weeks to my recovery time".

Mozingo is currently working the Rice Owls Elite Showcase, (baseball camp), at Reckling park.

Definitely don't want a surgery wound getting infected because of an ant bit. I'm not a doctor, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, and I think its a smart move:-)

Champions can be brought down by some of the weirdest things, but an ANT BITE, I've heard it all. Can we all him Chad "Ant Bite" Mozingo, playing in left field.
