Rice Owl Rendon says---There's Not That Much Pain!

Rendon/Rice Sports Information

Rendon sounded like a new man on the other end of the telephone. He was cheerful and in good spirits after roughly a week of rest following surgery to repair his right ankle, injured in the Baton Rouge Super Regional.

"I feel a lot better. They left the splint on. But at first, after sugery, my foot was still swollen. But, now the swelling has gone down and I can move my foot around---I'm doing a lot better---no more pain. There's not that much pain."

Rendon suffered a level three ankle sprain, the most severe of all ankle sprains, during the second inning of the NCAA Super Regional in Baton Rouge versus LSU. While chasing down a fly ball deep in foul territory along the third base line, Rendon stepped in what he describes as thin deep soil near the bullpen.

After the dust settled, he realized that he could not put pressure on nor move the foot and had to be carried off the field by teammates, Benak and Haynes. The injury would end a freshman All-American season made of dreams.

If there's a silver lining in this injury, Rendon suffered no fractures. He tore two major ligaments in his ankle and other ligaments were severely stretched. Rendon says full recovery is three months.

"Actually, I'm not doing anything now. I just have to go to my follow-ups. I haven't gone to the doctor yet. But, I'm through with my surgery. But, I'm going this Thursday, (morning), at 11:00 and I guess they'll just give me more information then."

Rendon currently has a splint on the foot which is keeping the ankle in place. However, doctors could go in a different direction on Thursday to help further the healing process.

"They'll make a decision to put me in a boot or not---so I can take the boot on and off---so I can shower and stuff with the boot off."  Yes---Anthony has been taking showers for those of you who are reading this and wondering!

"I just have to wrap a BIG trashbag around my leg so that it doesn't get wet!"

He was laughing while saying that and that's a good sign!
