The English synth-prog upstarts known as Zoltan have recently released a loving musical tribute to the score for the 1973 undead biker B-movie Psychomania.

The film's original score was composed by noted British library musician John Cameron, and was notable even then for its masterful arrangement of dance-worthy funk grooves and grim atmospherics, both of which fit perfectly against the film's cheeky tale of a satanic biker gang who return from self-induced death to wreak havoc upon the living.

Zoltan-who themselves released a fantastic debut LP for Cineploit Records titled First Stage Zoltan in 2012-have taken great care to respect Cameron's original melodies and themes here in their re-imagining, yet the band has to be commended for confidently taking the reins of inspiration here as they twist and turn the Psychomania score into something which now can decidedly be considered a joint-ownership.

The locked grooves here on this limited edition vinyl and CD release creep along with lurching analog menace as Zoltan filter Cameron's library funk into more horrific territory, echoing at times the works of Italian composers Fabio Frizzi, Stelvio Cipriani and Goblin as the propulsive drumming and eerie synth lines weave their magic, ghost-like atop a pulsing, throbbing bass-line back beat.

The effect as a whole is extremely enjoyable and atmospheric as hell, practically begging for repeated spins as the memories of director Don Sharp's original film come rushing back to fans and fiends. Hell, even if one is unfamiliar with the source material here, Zoltan's musical attack on this tribute to John Cameron's Psychomania score is powerful enough to stand tall on its own as one monstrously effective musical work to cap off 2013.
