Here's a challenge: watch You're Next without getting "Looking for the Magic" by Dwight Twilley Band stuck in your head. I'm finding it hard to remember the last movie that made such good use of a song. This is just one of the achievements of this independent horror film from 2011 that has only been released now by a major studio in 2013.
You're Next is what I would call a feel good horror movie. Its goal is not really to scare, but to entertain. It is funny just as much as it is a horror movie. However, the movie stays just serious enough that I wouldn't call it a flat out comedy. You're Next is a perfect blend of horror and laughs.
The horror genre definitely has its share of cliche`s and it is good to see some of them poked fun at. You're Next is almost a parody of a horror film in some ways. Its just that it also works as a serious horror film if you want it to and that is what makes it so satisfying.
There are plenty of interesting deaths in You're Next and they all come pretty quickly. The movie is well paced with not a lot of filler. It really gets right to the action right away and doesn't take too many breaks from it once it starts.
The only problem with You're Next is that it may be too simple in some ways. The plot is really thin and while this makes for a tight and fast paced movie while watching, it also makes for not a lot to think about once it is over. That said, I think there is enough going on in the movie to make it work.
So, what is the plot of You're Next? Well, it involves a family that is gathering together just as a series of murders begin around them. Who will survive the night? That's for the viewer to find out.
You're Next is, in the end, just what the horror genre needed. It is a straightforward horror movie that isn't afraid to poke a little fun at itself every now and then. It has got both laughs and thrills at the same time and really, what more do you need?
