You'll want to keep Something Borrowed

When romantic-comedies get both elements right they produce can’t miss movie entertainment.  Something Borrowed beautifully wines and dines you with big laughs and several surprises in its story of mismatched lovers.  Throw in a host of quirky, obnoxious, charming, and hilarious supporting characters and you’ve got a DVD offering you definitely want to borrow from your Roanoke Valley Public Library.

Ginnifer Goodwin is adorably delightful as Rachel, a young lawyer joined at the hip since childhood to her best friend Darcy (Kate Hudson).  Fans of Goodwin as Diane on the television series Ed will find Rachel to be much like Diane all grown up.  Rachel has always deferred to her wild free-spirited friend.  She even gave Darcy the green-light to date Dex (Colin Eggelsfield), Rachel’s college pal and secret desire.

Not long before Darcy and Dex’s wedding, a boozy chance meeting culminates in Dex waking up in Rachel’s bed.  Things get more complicated when the three holiday at a beach house with other friends, especially after Rachel confides in Ethan (John Krasinski), her other childhood pal who secretly pines for her.  You’ll find yourself rooting for the coupling you want to see happen and may be surprised by the conclusion.

Goodwin is alternately funny, charming, sexy, and heartbreaking in a role that was tailor made for her.  Hudson tackles her role with wonderful wild abandon.  She has some truly funny moments, yet someone has to play the villain.  Ultimately, we pity rather than take a liking to Darcy.

John Krasinski steals the movie from his male co-stars.  His performance exudes an easy going charm and hilarity that climaxes in a poignant and heartbreaking confession to Rachel.  It’s a great scene for both he and Goodwin.  And let’s not forget the hilarious Ashley Williams as Claire, Ethan’s crazy date he can’t get rid of.

Funny, charming, and romantic, Something Borrowed is a DVD you won’t want to return.
