Within the horror genre there are tons of sub-genre’s but none more popular than the slasher flick. There are so many different styles of the slasher film that it is becoming more and more difficult to see something that stands out. The latest Silent But Deadly plays more as a slasher comedy and features Jason Mewes of Jay and Silent Bob fame, but is he able to slash this film to something fun or will it get lost in the flood of gory attempts before it.
Silent But Deadly follows an introverted loner who prefers his beloved goat to other people, but when he gets a job working on a movie set and his goat becomes dinner for the crew he unleashes bloody vengeance. This is one of those really fun low budget horror films that delivers all the cheese you expect. Mewes does a great job as the silent killer only delivering lines when he sees the next weapon he plans to use and it is not only effective but a bit funny too. The rest of the cast offer up over the top performances that you would expect from this type of movie that actually adds to the fun. There are some fun kills, that would have been awesome had they not used so much of the horrible CG. The opening of the film sets the tone, but then you will have to wait for some time for more killing to start and instead hang out with these weirdos for a bit which is fine, but this structure forced them to rush the gore festivities a bit at the end trying to cram them all in.
This isn’t a film breaking any molds in the genre, but it clearly knows what it is and in turns works. It is a cheesy stupid slasher flick and lets you know it pretty quick. Hopefully it will do well enough to spawn a sequel with a bit more of a budget as Mewes is fun to watch and does a good job. If you are a fan of these low-budget silly horror films then you will surely enjoy this one.
Be sure to check out Silent But Deadly when it hits DVD and VOD on September 24th.
