If you have ever thought the word Christian and Yoga could not be combined, you may find yourself in for a very nice treat as a believer.
No matter what we are doing to take care of our bodies, scripture tells us to do so.
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body. – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
YOGAFAITH is a non-profit ministry that combines the love of God and a passion for yoga. If you have not attended a YOGAFAITH class, they are truly awesome. In all honesty it is difficult to describe the amazing healing that happens on a yoga mat. It may sound strange to you, but you just have to experience it.
First thing's first. Yoga in itself is not a religion, but aspects of yoga have been incorporated into various religions. You do not have to religious to practice yoga, but often times the practice itself can be very spiritual. However, Yoga is non-sectarian and creates a harmonious balance mind, body, and spirit, for believers and nonbelievers alike. The Hinduism culture may very well be the most popular religious group that incorporated yoga creating a myth that many believe yoga is Hinduism or you have to be Hindi to practice yoga. Both are a myth and not actually fact as Yoga predates Hinduism.
Meditation is a large part of the Bible and Yoga. Meditation simply means contemplation. During an individuals yoga practice, there is freedom to meditate upon whatever you choose. For a Christian, this may be a time you contemplate a scripture, or focus on a heart of gratitude for every blessing, or come to the mat, maybe on bended knees (think Child's Pose) for praise and worship to God.
Mark 12:30 declares that we praise God with our entire being, our mind, body, spirit, and all our strength. So whether we are lifting weights, doing cross fit, zumba, or practicing yoga, we are taking care of our temples and honoring God by doing so.
Acts 17:28 In Him we move, we live, we breathe, and we have our being.
This one verse in the foundation of YOGAFAITH. Whatever we are doing we are to do it unto the Lord.
