It's been a long road for Yidhra, who formed in 2008 and released a critically acclaimed, self-titled EP the following year. Hexed, set for release on Friday September 13, was nearly a year in the making. It's well worth the wait.
Yidhra is the dream witch created by HP Lovecraft, one of the "Outer Gods" in the Cthulhu Mythos. She can take on the shape of any creature she devours. That backstory weaves its way into the wicked tapestry of the band's sound. Yidhra has heavy riffs and slow grooves that give you a feeling that something is constantly morphing. "Witch Queen," which opens the album, covers the subject of
Yidhra herself. The album, overall, has a heavy, low, classic doom sound with layers of guitar, theremin and growling vocals. The theremin will guide you through the entire album, making for song changes that are more organic than the usual four-second pause.
Hexed was produced by Bill Metoyer, who has worked with Slayer, Corrosion of Conformity and Morbid Angel. The album might not be on the Billboard Top 100, but it isn't meant for that. It's better than that. Do yourself a favor and pick up Hexed from Yidhra.
