The Yakima Skybox 16 is a sleek cargo box that is ideal for vehicles with shorter rooftops and has an aerodynamic design to help reduce drag and wind noise. The dual-sided opening on the Skybox makes for easy access on either side of your vehicle. The spacious carrying capacity allows for more gear packing and will free up that space in your car for passengers.
The Skybox 16 is perfect for hauling gear for up to three campers. It will hold skis or snowboards up to 180cm. There are internal lid stiffeners for added rigidity, and the SuperLatch™ security ensures your lid is secure to its base and your gear is safe. The quick-release mounting hardware fits round, square, factory, and most aerodynamic bars. Hatch clearance is improved with the tapered rear design. SKS Lock Cores are included with the Skybox.
The setup and installation for the Skybox was easy. The instructions were very straightforward, and there were illustrations to show how everything should look during installation. The landing pad, control towers and 58” crossbars were very simple to mount. It didn’t take a whole lot of effort, and it was a quick setup. The one thing recommended if you’re vertically challenged would be to have someone help you place the Skybox on your roof rack as it can be awkward and prove to be difficult to get it on top of your car. Since the Skybox has dual-sided openings, make sure one side is completely closed and locked before opening the other side as both sides aren’t meant to be open at the same time. It will throw off the positioning of the box while trying to close it.
The room in the Skybox 16 is fantastic. I’ve had to forego letting more passengers ride in the car in the past if the trip required a great deal of gear for all activities we do while camping. My car would be packed beyond capacity with only two passengers in the car, and it’s a 5-passenger 2010 Subaru Outback. With the Skybox, it has opened up space for at least four passengers with gear packed in the car. We’ve been able to pack all climbing, biking and sleeping gear in the Skybox leaving room in the back of the car for other necessities for four people. The Skybox has really made all the difference for packing volume, and it doesn’t look bulky, it’s easy to access, and very durable.
The Yakima Skybox 16 is highly recommended if you need extra cargo space for your outdoor adventures. Other sizes available are 12, 18 and 21 cubic feet. All have a matte black textured finish. It has really been a useful addition to my car, and it is nice to have back seats open for actual people to sit in instead of loads of equipment.
