By now everyone knows that I consider The Young and the Restless the best soap on television. Besides it being number one for twenty three years straight it has the most talented cast and crew. It has loyal fans who stick with it through regime changes and hope for the best with each one.
This week they once again have shown why they are the best. They honored one of their own, the Duchess, Jeanne Cooper. Other soap show a montage and call that their memorial. Even when it was the oldest cast member, someone who epitomizes the show, none have given 2 full days to say goodbye, to honor their deceased loved one. They even changes the opening credits with pictures of Katherine, something most soaps would never bother doing, too much work.
This was what someone of Jeanne Cooper’s stature deserved. She was Y&R. She made it what it is. She deserved the love and devotion she received and Y&R has raised the bar for the other soaps. We lost other greats like Frances Reid of DOOL, John Ingle of GH,Helen Wagner of ATWT, all of whom deserved a grand send off.
This was a beautiful memorial and the cast surely meant every word they said about Katherine/Jeanne. From the start with Danny Romalotti/ Michael Damian singing “I’ll still be loving you” with scenes of this magnificent woman , to Father Todd played by Jeanne's son Corbin Bernsen it was a day to remember. Jess Walton was exceptionally poignant and showed her love for the character as well as the woman who portrayed her. Melody Thomas Scott also stood out, but this was a labor of love and every actor showed their love and were all outstanding. Her ashes some of them actually Ms. Cooper’s were there and the goodbye was moving. The celebration ended with a joyous occasion orchestrated by Katherine, that being Paul and Christine’s wedding in the new Chancellor Park. Lovely and touching. Thanks Katherine.
Thanks Y&R for letting us share in this memorial. We were treated like family and isn’t that what soaps are all about?
