The tape has twenty one tracks by the twelve artists. The most surprising discovery when looking at the track list is that Chance The Rapper is missing. One of the most popular freshman this year did not feature a song on the mix tape. There is no word on why he chose not to participate, but it is a disappointment to a lot of fans.
The XXL Freshmen mix tape is noted as being a platform for the freshmen to display what is next in their career. What the freshmen put out here, is a big determinate if fans will respect the artist as a whole.
The mix tape has a lot of high points, but also a lot of low points. A notable high point is the fact that Vic Mensa put out a song, "Major Pain," that makes up for his wear freestyle and cypher verse.
A clear stand out on the mixtape is Ty Dolla $ign. His songs on the tape are "Type Of S*** I Hate," featuring Fabolous and "Know You Ain't S***." The songs are in no way lyrically developed but they both show that there is a lot more radio hits to be expected from the rapper/singer. Some other front runners on the tape are Kevin Gates, Isaiah Rashad and Jon Conner.
The mix tape starts off with pitfalls. The first two songs by Lil Durk and Rich Homie Quan do not create any type of excitement for the rest of the mixtape. The songs have no conception and are just dull. Luckily, both Lil Durk and Quan make up for their pitfalls with two other songs they have later on the tape.
Overall, the tape this year wasn't terrible, but it wasn't very exciting either. It didn't necessarily make the listener believe that they artists on this mix tape were the future of hip hop. Also, the fact that Chance The Rapper did not join makes it all the more disappointing. There are still artists on the tape that are still dope and need to be watched.
