Have you ever wondered, especially as a child what video game characters do when the console or arcade is closed down for the night?
Disney brings that thought to life in the cute animated feature, Wreck It Ralph.
Gamers, former gamers, parents, and kids can find amusement in this feature with many notable stars lending their voices to this movie. The most notable seems to be John C. Reilly (who is best known for comedies like Step-Brothers and Walk Hard The Dewey Cox Story), Jane Lynch (Glee, Criminal Minds), comedienne Sarah Silverman as the Candy Crush Girl, and Dennis Haybert who most fans would recognize from either the All State Commercial or the popular action/drama series "24" or if you are in the "to young to feel this old" category of your thirties or better like myself you possibly known him as Pedro, the Cuban baseball player in Major League or as Chief in Navy Seals (love that movie!) both with crazy man Charlie Sheen.
Reilly's character Ralph is the central figure in this movie. He's a bad guy who even attends Bad Guys Anonymous movies with classic bad guys like King Koopa from the Mario series. He doesn't want this to be his lot in life especially since the game he lives in, he is shut out from social events mainly in his own game because his object is to wreck things. He sneaks into a game like Halo and meets Lynch's character Calhoun who has a tragic almost Kill Bill back story. She believes him to be one of her soldiers and thinks he's a crazy person, a glitch who is trying to mess things up. Only he wants the hero medal that the General (Haybert) gives away when the game has been defeated. He actually does defeat the alien boss to get the trophy but he misses the opening of the arcade risking the existence of his own game because if the game has a 'out of order' sign for two days then they are unplugged. They are then left homeless in the video game console if you are the main character like Q-bert, the rest it is hinted that they no longer exist. So the people are even more angry at Ralph and leave the game before it can be unplugged. Ralph ends up in a Candy style racing game and uncovers a mysterious little girl, Vanellope who steals his hero medal to buy her way into a race that the "Kandy King" doesn't want her in....the other racers tease and torment this little girl because they think she is a glitch.
They become friends as they build her a custom race car so she can compete and he helps her train in a cave that the main characters aren't able to get too. The "Kandy King" convinces Ralph that she's a glitch and if she able to be a playable character the next day then she could glitch out and risk destroying them all when they get unplugged. So he is a "Wreck It" guy so he destroys her car and her heart in the process. Felix Jr (played by 30 Rock Star Jack McBrayer) goes looking for him when they are "out of order" and tries to convince him to come back, he eventually does and when he's about to be thrown off the roof he sees the little girl's candy racing game. The glitch is apparently not a glitch since her picture is plastered all over the sides just like Felix is on their game, Sonic on his, and etc. She is the star of her game and he knows something is off. Felix ends up following him and fixing the girl's car and falls for Calhoun who is freaked by his attentions.....at first. The "Kandy King" is the glitch. He's the main character from an old racing game who snuck into the Candy Racing Game, 'jail broke it' and created his own persona while turning her into a glitch that would often blink out and appear someplace else. The other characters memories were erased to accept "Kandy King" as their leader when its supposed to be Princess Vanellope as their leader/star. So Ralph, Calhoun, and Felix try to help her get back into the race even though it seems kind of Mad Max when the King is trying to wreck her car so she can't win. Only they don't know that Ralph has brought one of the aliens from Calhoun's game and they threaten to take/over the candy game. They have to defeat the aliens so she has a chance. Ultimately, Vanellope is crowned the Candy Princess again but she doesn't want to accept the dress and I believe becomes the President rather than the princess because she doesn't like the whole idea of one person having total control to make everyone's life miserable by taking away the rights of the other characters....(sound familiar on a real life front?)
When I bought this movie for my son, there was very few copies of the dvd/blue ray/digital downloads available so Amazon maybe the best place to have the most enjoyable uses out of this movie so that it can be taken on the go on long car trips with the kids.
