The ultimate Pink Floyd tribute band, Wish You Were Here, returned to Columbus' Newport Music Hall last night. Once again, they failed to disappoint with a set list that appeased the casual fan and left the die hard fans drooling as well. The band typically tours on a theme and last night was no exception as they brought the Floyd's iconic live album Live at Pompeii back to life.
Made up of songs that create the perfect live atmosphere; Pompeii went over very well with a crowd made up of a large number of college students in the early stages of their Floyd experience and plenty of aging hippies who were no strangers to the album. There were folks that fit the stereotype of Pink Floyd fans, stoners tripping on acid and enough pot to satisfy Cheech and Chong, I've always felt that Floyd's music is actually most enhanced on a clean mind. The subtle nuances in these songs and the wall of sound coming from the stage can naturally put you in a state of peace of mind. As a WYWH veteran, now, the most satisfying thing for me is seeing young people still embracing this music. That was highlighted by a group of frat boys in the front row. Seeing the sheer enjoyment on their faces when they heard the intro to songs that they knew. Their absolute amazement in seeing Ziffel the Pig make his appearance on the stage is what it's all about. People have the freewill to do whatever they want to their bodies, but contrary to what the mainstream would have you believe, I don't believe the Pink Floyd experience was ever meant to be about being loaded.
Rather, I believe it was created to challenge the mind of the listener. Music that tried to capture the element of our deepest mental states. Elements of fear, depression, greed, anger and rebirth fused with a sonic wall of music, created the unique and timeless sound of Pink Floyd. There is a reason why this music lives on, as some of it has for over forty years. People can relate to it, and as they always do, Wish You Were Here were able to nearly flawlessly recreate that vibe for the masses.
