I do not have any sorrow for publicaly defiling Are You There, Chelsea? as it has been one of the worst sitcom pilot’s I’ve seen. (I refuse to acknowledge the much much worse Work It in a full review). Well last night, CBS premiered the new sitcom entitled Rob! Starring Rob Schneider which centers on solitary guy, Rob, who marries into a huge Mexican-American family.
It’s a very by the book and basic pilot, and it doesn’t sound too enticing, and reflecting back on the horrible shows that premiered this January, Rob! is a glorified success.
BUT.
Ahem.
Yes, let’s clarify there is a giant caps locked BUT above here.
That does not mean that is a good show. It doesn’t mean it’s a bad show either. It is the only pilot that from start to finish, wasn’t that bad. It wasn’t that good either. It was mediocre. And that is okay by me. My friend and fellow critic Jerome said something similar, which is, frankly put, that just because it’s better than Are You There, Chelsea? and Work It doesn’t mean much. I also will agree with him in regards to the cliché Uncle who mooches off of Rob, but, mad props to two actors on the show.
While the show is hardly worthy of any accolades, it does deserve a few. The props I’m referring to is to lead actor Schneider and Cheech Marin in playing against type. The previews make Marin to be a bit more of a cliché like Uncle Hector or whatever but Marin really grounds his performance, and Schneider is doing something I’ve never seen him do, which is play a normal guy. And not a normal guy who becomes a gigolo, or anything else, but a normal guy who marries a girl he likes and is having normal guy problems with his wife’s family. And It was refreshing.
Overall, Rob! was tame, mediocre, and actually didn’t burn my eyes. I’ll give it a few more episodes to see how it plays out, as it has the same vibe of Sh*t My Dad Says from last television season, which is, it ‘could’ get better. Then again, that doesn’t mean it will.
But what do YOU think, examiners?
