For the past two years, Wicked Purses has been producing dreamy retro handbags inspired from classic cars, rockabilly and the alternative subculture. All the bags are expertly hand made using top grade automotive upholstery, vinyl or cloth fabric. They have been inset with stylish pieces of printed cotton that adds a dash of flair. They carry many different designs that include images of skulls, tattoo art, pinups, animal motifs, motorbikes, hotrods, and flowers such as red roses. The craftsmanship is absolutely superb; they are even lined with luxurious fabrics such as crushed velvet.
Rachel Caffrey and her mother Sybil McGinnis are the design team. After graduating from Kwantlen College’s automotive upholstery course, Rachel worked as an upholsterer at a local hotrod shop. This type of work entails re-designing, and recovering seats, replacing car headliners and customizing many facets of collector cars. One day she decided to make a purse that would match the upholstery in her old Chrysler. Family and friends were very impressed with it, so she decided to market the idea. At first she made these darling purses part time but soon discovered she had an incredible aptitude for designing and quit her job to continue making them on a full time basis.
Presently, they make seven delightful shapes and sizes. Some of them are reminiscent of 1950's bowling bags while others are formed like ancient television sets. The most popular types are the half moon, the long quad, and the atomic. They have already expanded into making bags for baby diapers, accessories, laptops and gym equipment. They are currently available in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Hawaii, California and London, England and through their website.
