Whoopie on the streets of New York City

It's a gob, it's a bob, and it’s a moon pie? No, it's a whoopie pie!  Pack up your pastry bags, cupcake, there is a new treat in town!  The sweetest thing to come from Amish country in PA, these cake-like cookie sandwiches are making their move to usurp the reigning dessert king. This nostalgic snack is tugging on America’s heart strings.

Perhaps, due to the sighing economy or their simplistic assembly, whoopie pies are baking their way into bakeries, literature, retail and homes just when we needed a little something to stir the dessert pot.  Who better to stir that pot than an innovative bakery that has chosen to take to the streets rather than stay in one bricks and mortar location? Sweetery NYC is the perfect bakery truck concept to take on the whoopie pie!

Known for their customizable sweet and savory croissants the "sweet" truck brings an array of fine treats and fair-trade coffee to the masses across New York City. Their truck is a marketing masterpiece- eye-catching and tattooed with hunger inducing words like, "Chocolatey" and "Freshly".  The interior of  Sweetery NYC owners, Grant Di Mille and Samira Mahboubian, truck "Chopper" is a full-fledge cafe kitchen.  I guess good things do come in small packages!

Speaking of small packages- one of the whoopie pie offerings of the Sweetery NYC is chocolate with a classic cream cheese filling.  The cookie itself is a waistline friendly 4 to 5 bites.  The cake-like chocolate cookies are very moist, and were true to the nostalgic power of this snack (think Little Debbie from your childhood snack time).  However, I felt that the cookie left a bit of a flour aftertaste instead of the chocolate bite it presented itself to be.  The cream cheese filling was very rich and smooth. I commend the bakers on their ability to balance the tang of the cream cheese with the sweetness from the sugar.  The cookie to filling ratio was a bit on the slim side, a schmere more of the filling would have made a nice addition to the overall taste of the whoopie pie. Not to be overlooked, the eco-friendly kraft bag packaging of the whoopie pie, and use of organic and sustainable ingredients makes their products even more delectable.

For my next visit to the truck, I'll look forward to customizing my own sweet croissant! The Sweetery NYC truck is a sweet addition to the streets of New York and the sweet tooth’s of its residents! Find the truck on twitter or facebook!
