According to The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, this teachers are incredible people, and I could not agree more. In my tenure as a school leader I met many wonderful, passionate teachers who really cared about their students progress and about their homelife. They gave so much of their time, passion, heart and soul to make a difference; they deserve special recognition.
Their backgrounds are varied. Some are professionals with advanced degrees in fields outside of education who have decided to bring their expertise into the classroom. Others are dedicated new professionals who come into a charter school after earning teaching degrees or completing training programs. Still others are school-district veterans willing to accept fewer guarantees in exchange for greater professional satisfaction and flexibility than they can find in district-run schools.
Charter school teachers want to work alongside educators who are as passionate as they are, and this is exactly the environment some charter schools strive to provide. Decisions about how a charter school operates and the unique programs it offers are made at the local level. This means teachers can have a direct voice in the school’s operations. Teachers can more easily react to meet the needs of their students by adjusting curriculum and trying new strategies for boosting student achievement. The truth is that many charter schools enable teachers to be instructional leaders in unique and transformative ways.
