School is back with a vengeance. Maybe you’ve bought some school supplies. But have you bought the right ones?
A lifelong learner and a nerd, I recently bought Whitelines Link notebooks from Fab. It’s $20 for a set of two notebooks, each with 80 lined sheets of paper.
You just reread that $20 price tag. Maybe you swore or made some small choking sounds. Maybe you’re about to stop reading, because you think I’m crazy.
But these are no ordinary notebooks. According to its developer, “Whitelines® Link is a happy combo of physical and digital notes. You could call it a clever scanner-app that in combination with Whitelines® Link paper makes it super easy to capture, save and share your notes.”
The light gray pages and white lines are designed to be more gentle on the eye; the background disappears when users copy, scan, or fax a page.
Each piece of paper also has Quick Boxes, which enable users to instantly create an email or send their notes. Users check one of the boxes at the bottom of the page to instruct the app to do what they need it to do.
Here’s how it works:
1. Jot down some notes in your notebook.
2. Download the Whitelines App for free in the App store. (Note: The Link app is fully functional on an iPhone 4, but the iPhone 4S works better. Link won't work with an iPhone 3GS or earlier, iPad 1 or 2, or an iPod Touch. With iPad 3, you'll need iOS6 for it to work).
3. Make sure the four corner markers on the paper are visible in the display of your phone. The app will detect the image, capture and adjust the quality, drop out the background, and leave you with just what you wrote on the page.
4. Share/save the image (e.g. email, copy, save to camera roll, send to Dropbox, Evernote, Facebook or Twitter).
Now, the price is still fairly steep, and likely not affordable if you need to buy a notebook for each of many classes. But definitely a cool concept if you just need one or two at a time – especially if you’re the type who tends to doodle when class gets a little…dull.
If you’re still not convinced, you can try Whitelines Link before you buy by printing free papers. The site provides A4 and A5, lined and squared, as PDF’s. ) Note that A4 will not be full size if printed on an A4 printer.)
